Art & Wine Pairing: Szabo Vineyards Tasting Room
Monday, June 25th, 2012
Nevada County has some amazing artists. We also have many award winning wineries. Nevada City and Grass Valley tasting rooms have incorporated local art into their venues. Since area artists never seem to have enough opportunities to display their work, this pairing benefits the artists and tasting room patrons.
Photographs by John Daly are currently on display in Szabo’s Nevada City tasting room. Go enjoy a glass of one of my favorite wines while enjoying John’s beautiful work. Do you have a favorite local tasting room? Let me know so I can write about it.

Hirschman’s Trail is for the Birds!
Monday, April 23rd, 2012
After seven long years, the Hirschman Trail project is complete! The grand opening was held last Saturday, April 21 – just in time for some outstanding weather. Within walking distance of downtown Nevada City, the trail is 2.5 miles long. Open to hikers, mountainbikers, dog walkers, it even includes a section that is ADA compliant and wheel chair accessible. Oh, and don‘t forget your fishing pole.
The trail is the result of a partnership between the City of Nevada City and the Bear Yuba Land Trust and appears to be a smashing success. So about the birds – the pond is quite lovely and apparently a wide variety of birds think so too.
Our friend Cheryl Noble, who produces Sierra Snapshots filmed a great segment that’s for the birds – who you callin’ a Bufflehead? How about a Pied-billed Grebes, American Dipper, Belted Kingfisher, or a Hooded Mereganser, ( I couldn’t make these up if I tried), just to name a few. One of my favorites, a Bald Eagle, was recently sighted!
Check out the great photos Erin Thiem of The Outside Inn took in one of her recent blogs about the trail.
Next time you’re in Nevada City, make it a point to check out this little gem. Bring a picnic basket and your camera.

Dog Art in Nevada County
Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Painting by Monique Hanson
Who doesn’t like dog art?
A ton of artists live in Nevada County. Many of them love painting, drawing, sculpting and photographing furry, four-legged family members.
This great painting of me was done by our friend Monique Hanson. I was only about 9 months old at the time, shortly after I came to live with Carla. Mo thinks I’m a handsome fellow, so she decided to use me as a subject.
Monique loves to paint dogs, cats and horses. She has even paints turtles, goats, llamas and pigs! I guess people just love their animals so much they want portraits and photos of them around.
Moira McLaughlin loves dogs and dog art so much that she has a blog called, Dog Art Today.
We have another friend who loves to photograph people and their dogs and horses. Her name is Sue McCarley and her business is called For His Glory Photography. She took this awesome photo of me for Carla.
We’re not just furry and cute, we can be art too!
